Basically if I have a site with very few links and I want to increase it's link popularity to get it higher up a google etc search and I put it at wikipedia's IP address 30 or more duplicates will soon appear, each linking to my site, + that's 30 sites from whicvh someone will potentially link through to my site. I believe that it is actually a village, though it is part of Lysa. In English a village does not always have a seperate political identity. Check out this page - It identifies it as both a village and part of Lysa:

I think that it deserves its own page - even though politically it is Lysa. I rode my bike there from Kareny and it was surrounded by countryside, not obviously part of Lysa, but a seperate settlement. There should be a link on the Lysa page to Byšičky, though.

Failed Edits Problem

I was browsing a forum in which a number of Wikipedians were discussing the failed edit problem. And I think that I have the solution.

From what I understand, the problem could result from human error. Many people, when editing, have a number of windows open on an article. They enter an edit to one window, and then, without refreshing their browser, edit that same page again, negating the original edit with their save....

Thanks for the note. I meant no harm by posting the link to the TaxAlmanac.org site. Jimmy Wales, was kind enough, to spend time with our development team last April as we created this Wiki site. He even directed the Time magazine author of "It's a Wiki, Wiki World" to us and we were featured in Time's June 6, 2005 edition.

TaxAlmanac is the only free online resource of its kind dedicated to tax research and is the only free site that contains an updated US Internal Revenue code (the IRS.gov site was last updated in 2002). I posted the link where I thought others that had interest in tax might find extremely useful.

I understand very deeply what Wikipedia is trying to do and again appreciate your guidance. I can assure you, I meant no harm.

I'll address each of your comments:

When BeTheBest was referring to tax code, he was not referring to computer compiled code, but instead to the tax law (referred to in the United States as the tax code).

• It is even possible they are not interested in US taxation system but in more general information.

TaxAlmanac.org contains primarily tax information and resources for tax professionals in the United States, but articles have been submitted for other countries as well, such as Canadian Tax and Australian Tax.

• Try to look for more convenient articles, e.g. such that list tax software for the US system.

This site is not a software product at all. It is a Wikipedia style resource for information about tax law, tax law interpretation, etc.

• Please not in put TaxAlmanac.or in articles about competing products. (AFAICS Intuit has absolutely nothing in common with it.)

On the contrary, Intuit has quite a bit in common with it - Intuit created this site. The Intuit logo can be easily seen at the bottom of every page on the site. Intuit has made it available to the tax community at no charge.

I don't see that there is anything wrong with providing a link to this valuable free resource to those interested in performing tax research or to those interested in one of Intuit's newest offerings.

I'll state up front that I am not an uninterested party as I am the 'moderator' on TaxAlmanac.

overcategorisation

Some categories, like Category:Modern artists are so all-embracing that their value is zero. For example Adolf Born ([2]) fits into relatively small category of Czech painters but adding supercategory "modern artist" is just noise, not improving quality of the article, IMHO. Requesting assistance in handling disruptive behavior.

Hi Pavel, I would greatly appreciate if you look into the mess created in the article Rohingya. This is quite an interesting issue; a few months ago, I removed the copyvio and then organized the article into sections and cleaned up the links. For some reason, several anon editors in the block 212.138.47.* seem to take offence at my "touching" "their" article, and started vandalizing my user/talk pages. Some of these vandals were blocked by other admins.

Last week, these vandals created several sockpuppet accounts, including Antirajib (talk · contribs). You can see from the account name what its purpose was. The user vandalized my user/talk pages besides leaving abusive comments. The user was blocked immediately.

Yesterday and today, there has been a parade of sockpuppets all directed at either launching personal attacks, or avoiding 3RR. You can find several incoherent rants in Talk:Rohingya, my talk (User talk:Ragib and Mel's talk User talk:Mel Etitis. The language constructs and the irrational attitude ("how-dare-I-touch-their-article-being-a-Bengali" etc) points out a single user behind all these.

I find the following accounts as sockpuppets of the same vandal from the ip block 212.138.47.*

• Yonglee (talk · contribs)
• Bobjack (talk · contribs)
• Antirajib (talk · contribs)

I urge everyone to take a look at the page history, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rohingya&curid=1918632&action=history . This is not even a dispute over content! I have not added or deleted any content other than the initial copyvio. I simply organized the article with sections, and cleaned up the external links. One of the links point to a blog, which the vandals ferociously object to as being termed a blog. I've gotten literally tired of the abuse these vandals launched on me. The level of racial and personal abuse is quite hard to take. Since it would be a conflict of interest in my part to take actions against these vandals, I would request you to look into this issue and decide.

Garry Kasparov incident

That newspaper isn't a tabloid, it's a political newspaper with a strong anti-Putin bent. The publication was a letter the police officers sent to Kasparov in response to his demand for a criminal investigation, so Kasparov himself brought attention to the matter, forwarding the letter to that specific newspaper. I think the fact that Kasparov demanded an investigation over something as trivial and then decided to publish that letter illustrates his character, his overreaction is more newsworthy than the incident himself.

But, if that incident is deemed not significant enough for Wikipedia, then the mention of another incident when he was hit by the chessboard in Moscow in 2005 should be deleted as well. There's no significant difference between the two cases.

Re: TOCright

Hi! My reasoning for using {{TOCright}} on ABC was that it was a disambiguation page — a list of links, and therefore should be made as short as possible vertically (though without using multiple columns for the links). Also, being a list of links, it would not disturb the flow of the page. Therefore, in my humble opinion, there was reasonable grounds to use TOCright.

The Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages) advises the use of TOCright on dab pages, though I admit it is still young and may not reflect everything with absolute perfection yet, but in my opinion TOCright should be used on dab pages. Rest assured I don't use TOCright whenever, wherever — I did have grounds to use it on ABC. I hope you'll consider the use of TOCright on that page. In any case, on Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages), it is quite clear that TOCright should be used on disambiguation pages, and there is no dispute about this. I don't know about other situations; I can think of few times where it would be useful except this — but please be aware that whatever discussions may be wherever, the disambiguation pages manual still likes TOCright.

I don't mean to make a big deal over one TOC on one page — though I do hope TOCright would be used on ABC, where I think it would be of good use — but I'm not trying to make a big fuss about it and I'm not bothered to change it until that manual's been in place for a while longer. I have had many sources for the reason that Ethiopia had only 100,000 men. I read a book by an editor, an Encyclopedia on World War II, and then a website. I am most definately sure that Ethiopia only mobilized about 100,000 soldiers in that war, and I am considering only the appropriately equipped regular army soldiers, not the ones with spears. Either way, I'm not going to engage in a senseless edit war, something he seems to revel in and thrive on. My last request for mediation fizzed out with no effect. Do you think I could go straight for arbitration then?

Would you know an admin interested in Czech towns? Are you familiar with the Gdansk Vote? I posted there too and it seems that NoPuzzleStranger's grudge (or whatever it is) goes back to that edit war, but he seems to respect the results of the vote there. Article with invalid name

Page like Prague - Žižkov Television Tower cannot be referenced from outside (impossible to enter such name in address box). Such page was created in old times when UTF8 support was not available but someone tried to use non-Latin1 alphabet anyway. Redirects are cheap but such clearly wrong names are pretty annoying. Well, theoretically it may be referenced but no human will do it (and Google shows no links here). Even someone with a Central Europe ISO encoding of text will reach the page with correct dicritics, not the mangled one. I do participate in Wikipedia, I just don't always log in. I tend to brush up the spelling and grammar on pages that I come across, contribute links, and contribute to wikinews (for example I was the created the stub about the IRA declaring that it would disarm - the IP address there is my one). I only log in to do this occasionally, and did not register as a user solely to vote. I certainly did not vote in it just as a joke, and I take wikipedia very seriously. - Graius

Musical instrument/ensemble external links

Hey Pavel, your work to keep wikipedia spam-free is a thankless but extremely important effort. But the price you pay for being a spamcop is that occasionally you remove some "High content pages that contain neutral and accurate material not already in the article". I believe that's the case with the links I added to some musical instrument/ensemble/composer pages -- links to a public broadcasting site containing complete classical works in streaming audio and thorough supporting information. For example, is it relevant to link from a gamelan orchestra article to a site where you can hear an actual gamelan orchestra perform? Or from an article about a composer to a site where you can hear pieces by the composer? I believe so.

if there is a policy against adding user forum links to SuperCollider page, that's fine. but why do you label my addition as linkspam? Spam means adding something irrelevant. this SuperCollider user forum http://www.nabble.com/SuperCollider-f2891.html is highly relevant to the SuperCollider site and users. If you look a bit closer, the forum is a combined searchable archive+forum, it's a useful 3rd-party tool to the SuperCollider users and site. Why forbid adding things useful?

also, may I ask what's the value of this link here: http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?SuperCollider - it's a repeat of SuperCollider, what value does it bring to the SuperCollider users? plus, it's a commercial site (c2.com sells consulting service).

If host.sk is in the spam filter, no one can edit the page as long as that link stays there. I wanted to edit the page but wasn't able to until I removed that link.

Haley Eclipse or ECLiPSe

I was the one that added the reference to ECLiPSe with a link to its website before I changed it to a reference to Haley Eclipse with a link to Haley's website; I didn't link to a more specific page from that website because I wasn't able to navigate through the site with my browser. Before I added the original link, there was just a reference to some project named "Eclipse", which I assumed to be ECLiPSe just because I couldn't find anymore projects named "Eclipse" that better resembled CLIPS. That was until I found some other page relating a "Haley Eclipse" to CLIPS. After that I read that Haley Eclipse is (or was), like CLIPS, an expert system, which ECLiPSe isn't, and then realized that Haley Eclipse was probably the "Eclipse" that was originally referred to. I just learned, though, that Haley Eclipse is no more; It was substituted by "Haley Rules", I believe. By using a browser that can actually navigate the site I also learned that you have to be a registered user to access the pages describing Haley's products; that kind of restricts the link to point only to the company's website, I guess. external links vs. link

IMO links should be used all the time. But see this page. I also remember someone having a project (but unfortunately can't seem to locate it now) to go through all articles and to make sure every one had "external links" even if there was one link, so using external link reduces consistency from the goals of this project chowells 18:48, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

Kunětice Mountain and Castle

Pavel: Thanks for fixing the Kunětice Mountain and Kunětice Mountain Castle articles.

Take a look at the pictures in the two external links on the Kunětice Mountain Castle article. I put those links there, but now that I look closely, I see that they don't seem to be pictures of the same place. Perhaps the pictures on the first link really show Pardubice Castle? If so, then probably the first link should be eliminated. In any case, you would probably have a better idea than I would.

Also: The new map image you placed on Kunětice Mountain Castle shows a different location from the map image on Kunětice Mountain. I imagine the mountain and the castle are in the same place, so one of those pictures must be wrong. But I don't know which one.

By the way, if you need to reply, you can go ahead and do so here; I'll watch this page for a few days.

Alfons Mucha {{Link FA|ru}} template

The {{Link FA|ru}} tag on the Alfons Mucha page is actually a marker that the Russian version of the article was a featured article on the Russian Wikipedia. It should show up as a little orange star just next to the interwiki link. I suppose that if the image wasn't there, all you'd see is an indented link. If the image didn't show up for you, I would suggest either that you have your "automatically load images" option turned off, or that your browser merely failed to load the image. Hitting "refresh" on your browser would probably reload it.

Other than that, I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't be able to see the star. Microtonal...(Put your head on my shoulder) 03:17, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Population transfer postWW2 or so called "expulsion of Germans"

The whole article is a mess actually.First of all see that Germans are called "expelled" in the article while Poles, Ukrainians are "resettled"-which seems to biased, because why the change in naming when faced with different etnic group ? Then you have the sentence that Germans were "killed" and estimated numbers.This also wrong since there never was any confirmation of the killings of all those people.No doubt some were killed, but the sentence ignores the fact of widespread famine and diseases in the time.Another point-the article in my opinion should be merged into one called Population Transfer in Nazi Occupied Europe, because you can't escape connecting it to other expulsions and population transfers(simply because some of the people settled by Reich are counted as expelled).They are other errors that result in POV, for example the sentence German property and land was confiscated.It gives impression that Germans were singled out, but ALL people had their property and land confiscated by communist government. --Molobo 17:22, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words! I like to learn about the smaller cities and towns from throughout central Europe, but a lot of the time there is not much information about them available in English. Usually I translate from the German wiki, but many of those articles aren't terribly detailed either. Are there any decent-sized Czech towns that do not at least have stubs yet? I am well aware of the current debates over terminology. There have recently been some very interesting works about how the Western conception of "Eastern Europe" developed, and also many criticisms of the idea of "Eastern Europe", however this does not change the fact that calling a region central Europe that almost everybody knows as Eastern Europe will only confuse readers. Czech stuff stubs

I suppose your message was meant as a kind of invitatation to give you a hand with that idea... I'd like to help you and generally spend much more time on helping such an amazing project as Wikipedia is. However, I haven't been able to find much time for Wikipedia recently. What I'd like to do would be to provide more pictures of Czech locations (I promised myself to take some snaps of Prague, the photos there are real bad ... shouldn't be such a problem when I live in Prague, but I've somehow never taken many pictures here ...) And I'd rather write some good texts to the articles rather than just creating stubs ... but I see that opening a stub might be a good way to encourage people to add a bit of information too.

Anyway, I don't like saying I don't have the time .. it's all about priorities. I'd like to help you with the project you mentioned, probably to create a stub plus adding some basic data into an Infobox. Do you have any priorities how to procede? All Czech regions have their pages (I guess I started some of them once), do all districts (okresy) have their entries? Though I'm still not sure about their relevance these days.) Would you like me to work on some regions preferably or go systematically down the administrative categories? Good idea might be to create a resource page with links to useful sites where anyone looking for data to use in a new entry migh find them? — Caroig 19:24, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Together with User:GrafZahl we improved the Template:Infobox Town template so that it handle most situations when some data is unavailable (it prints NA instead), thus all extra templates (noC etc.) are now redundant, furthermore I wrote a small PHP script which can convert old style infobox to the new one, keepeing all the data. It has a small database of coordinates + elevation data which it is can automatically add to the template. You can find all this on Czech Resources. –Caroig 18:43, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

The problem with the statistics site is that it is only in Czech, hardly useful on English Wikipedia, the link can be in the External Links section. There's another site: [4] which contains more useful data, overviews of towns/villages in region etc., unfortunatelly neither that one has an English version (only an English summary). There are nice maps on this site (e.g. [5]) - are you aware of the copyright status of works created by the Czech government, in US all such material is Public Domain (Wikipedia uses satellite images by NASA or maps by CIA)?. I managed to find an astronomical table (free for download at [6]) which constains possibly all Czech sites and their coordinates, I'll try to put on a script, which would retrieve them in a Wikipedia ready format.

Thanks for uploading Image:Jan Syrovy.gif. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Dve sady map

Sorry that you waited so long for my answer, but I was offline few days. I understand nearly 80 % of Czech language, but there is the problem with the rest. I used Inkscape to draw my map, not GIS program. I imported a bitmap to Inkspace as a pattern, drew a rectangle, modified it manually by adding lots of points and moving them to wanted place to get similar shape to original map. Yes, It's a good idea to create one set of maps for all Czech towns. English, German, Czech and Polish Wikies will have soon articles about all 527 Czech towns. And they will need complete set of maps. What is your proposal? Can you draw all maps? I can draw png as well as svg. I couldn't find empty map without red dot in your set of maps. In png red dot is unmovable, so will be a little work to delete it and draw new one. Can your put on Commons your empty map? Will be a good idea to keep all maps in one category? German linguists etc

Thanks! Are there categories for linguistic specializations too? I tried adding "Category:Arabic linguists" to Hans Wehr, but it turned red when I previewed. Same thing for "Category:Semitic linguists" and "Category:Semitists". Shouldn't there be categories like this? OT

Multiton example

I'm very confused by the statement that the example is vulnerable to double-checked locking. I'm very familiar with double-checked locking and I'm absolutely positive that it is not used in the example. The entire method body is inside a synchronized block. Double-checked locking would only apply if there was a check outside the synchronized block.

I'm not really asking anything here but I don't want to fix the article to have this comment re-added.

Well, I meant "expert" in a loose kind of way. More like "someone who knows something about the subject". Maybe I was wrong to tag it like that: it would just be nice if there were a big, well-sourced, pretty page there. I say so because I would like to read a good encyclopedia article about biofeedback. As far as people writing about themselves (ha ha ha!) I have noticed people trying to sneak links to their own sites in. I guess that's to be expected. That list of "beneficial side effects" seems like it comes right out of a commercial. Well, you're asking the impossible: I cannot understand what is neither explained, nor defendable. I read on your use page you worry Wikipedia will get a garbage bin reputation - but that is bound to happen in the eyes of everyone who got any decent scientific training, for the first rule is always to mention all sources; unfortunately most contributors are lax (okay, me to on occasion), lazy or worse in that respect, but there are certainly no possible excuses for attacking someone for doing it right! When a source was used (and I did for my minor contribution, so I know absolutely for sure) that alone makes it 'relevant' enough to be mentioned. What do you mean the list is unmanageable? Have yous seen List of Slovaks]? Thats an ugly list. This list is fine, it doesnt even have that many articles-less additions. I honestly don't think the list is in bad shape. I think what it may need are some people working on making articles for the article-less names, but otherwise it's reasonably full.
